Isotretinoin
Isotretinoin is derived from Vitamin A, meaning it is a Retinoid. More specifically it is a Retinoic Acid Derivative. It is found in small quantities in the body. It is medically used as a treatment for severe acne. It is also used in the prevention of certain cancers.
Isotretinoin works by dramatically reducing the size of the Sebaceous Glands (glands found throughout the skin that produce Sebum) and hindering the production of Sebum (oily secretion from the Sebaceous Glands, composed of fat and the debris of dead fat cells). This prevents clogged pores and blackheads from forming.
Most Bioavailable when taken with a high fat meal. It has a 21 hour half life.
The exact mechanisms on how it works is unknown, but it is known that it alters DNA Transcription. THis means that it transfers genetic information from DNA into RNA, essentially forming the template to shuttle aminos to Ribosome to make Protein or Peptides.
It is well suited for treatment of Severe Cystic Acne Vulgaris, Hidradentitis Suppurativa, and a few cases of Severe Acne Rosacea. It is not prescribed initially as it can have bad side effects. It is especially warned for the people prescribed to not take while pregnant. It is warned to not take with Tetracyclines or Vitamin A.
Side effects include:
Dryness of skin, mucous membranes, lips. Itchy skin, peeling, flushing, rash, sensitivity to light, dry eyes, raised liver enzymes, thinning hair, headaches, raised blood glucose, moodiness, fatique, cataracts, pancreatitis, hepatitis, impaired night vision, hair loss, degenerative disc disease and a few others.
